BEACH
BLANKET BABYLON
Steve Silver's BEACH BLANKET BABYLON is the longest
running, hit musical revue in theatre history. The Show
premiered at the Savoy Tivoli
in San Francisco's North Beach, June, 1974.
It is a zany musical spoof of pop culture with extravagant
costumes and outrageously huge hats. The Show's immediate
popularity forced it to move to larger quarters at Club
Fugazi, a North Beach landmark, where it eventually
found a permanent home. Now in its 29th year of sold-out
performances, BEACH BLANKET BABYLON is an internationally
acclaimed San Francisco institution. BEACH BLANKET BABYLON
in addition to the more than 10,000 performances in
San Francisco, has performed for wildly enthusiastic
audiences during its London and Las Vegas engagements.
BEACH BLANKET BABYLON continually evolves in its hilarious
parodies of popular icons, updating its spoofs and adding
new characters, songs, and send-ups throughout the year.
Please visit the Beach Blanket Babylon website for more
details and online ticket purchases. Book early as these
shows are always sold out.

ALCATRAZ
ISLAND
Alcatraz, which is Spanish for the word pelican, was
named Isla de los Alcatraces after the birds that were
the island's only inhabitants. The island began serving
as a military fortification in the 1850's, and an incarceration
facility for war prisoners during the Spanish-American
War. In 1934, Alcatraz was transformed into the infamous
maximum-security prison for some of the world's most
notorious criminals. Famous island residents have included
"Machine Gun" Kelly, Robert "Birdman"
Stroud, and of course, Al Capone.

Alcatraz
island is only one mile from the shore of San Francisco,
and there is no evidence of any successful escapes.
This prison was the only one in the federal system that
provided hot showers, a luxury designed to keep prisoners
from acclimating to cold water. Alcatraz remained a
federal penitentiary until 1963, Now, "The Rock"
is a popular tourist attraction. The 12-acre island
is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area
and is accessible daily for tours. Be sure to make advance
reservations to Alcatraz as the tours often sell out
weeks in advance.

ISLAND
From
1969-1971, a group of American Indians seized Alcatraz
island as a protest against the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Much of the island was destroyed during this period,
but the, mess hall, lighthouse, and main block remain
intact.
Alcatraz
is currently undergoing a major renovation. Historic
buildings are being stabilized and adapted for new uses,
and preserved for the future. This work will generate
several tons of rubble, most of which must be removed
from the island. In a unique arrangement with the National
Park Service, members of the public are being invited
to help "Save The Rock" by purchasing small
rocks which are actually pieces of construction rubble.
These items are being packaged and sold as souvenirs.
This effort will keep some of the debris out of landfills
and will also help defray a portion of the cost of this
multi-year restoration project. To purchase your piece
of "The Rock", please email us.
